Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has long been known throughout Brazil and the neighboring countries as an unbeatable style on the ground. Brazil is home to the most famous practioners ever and that is the Gracie family. The Gracie style Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was developed by the Grandfather of the art Grand Master Helio Gracie.

Helio learned Jiu Jitsu from his older brother Carlos who taught students throughout Brazil. Helio had trouble executing many of the moves that he had learned because of his size and a condition that he had as a child where he would have fainting spells running up and down the stairs. He eventually trained himself and outgrew that but was still a small and frail man.

Helio began to alter the moves that he had learned watching Carlos instruct others. He made the Jiu Jitsu work for him and his capabilities. By Grand Master Helio stepping out of the Jiu Jitsu norm he created an even better form of the art, now known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

Grand Master Helio enjoyed a long life of teaching Gracie Jiu Jitsu to Brazilians and others from around the globe. Helio had many accomplishments in his life including jumping into the Atlantic ocean in shark infested waters to save a man.

Helio now has a third generation Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu family who have made it their mission to bring the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to every continent in the world.

At One Spirit Martial Arts we have the privilege of having Pedro Sauer who is founder of the Pedro Sauer Association in the United States. Pedro also grew up with the Gracie family and was taken under their wing at the age of 15 and is now a world renowned instructor of the art known as Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Pedro is a classy and humble man with a rough childhood background in Brazil that has made him the confident and charismatic guy he is today. He takes nothing for granted in his life and teaches others through his instruction of Gracie Jiu Jitsu to have an open mind and live life to it’s fullest potential.

Professor Pedro Sauer has been gracious enough to share his knowledge of Gracie Jiu Jitsu with the residents of Northern Virginia (Va) and Maryland (Md). He has over 70 different clubs nationwide that are official Pedro Sauer Association members. We are blessed to have Professor Pedro Sauer teaching Gracie style Brazilian Jiu Jitsu several days a week at OSMA.
