History of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)Mixed Martial Arts or MMA as it is better known was brought to the mainstream international public when Royce Gracie became the first UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) champion. MMA fighting has gone on for centuries but has carried various names along the way. In 1920 in Brazil the Gracie family held Vale Tudo tournaments known as the “Gracie Challenge.” This Gracie Challenge or Vale Tudo tournament which was issued by Carlos Gracie and his father the Grand Master of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Helio Gracie, inspired the Japanese to create a shoot-style called Japanese professional wrestling and that eventually formed into the first Mixed Martial Art (MMA) that was made popular by the crowd pleasing Bruce Lee in the late 1960's or early 1970's. Bruce Lee is considered to be the first MMA star because he knew that to beat an opponent you must be able to adapt to every style. In fact the current President of the UFC (Dana White), refers to Bruce Lee as the “Father of Mixed Martial Arts or MMA. While the UFC started in the early 1990's, MMA didn’t get started in Japan until 1997 when the Pride Fighting Championships were created. MMA has quickly become a huge world wide money making sport. When MMA first started, little was known about the sport so there were no sanctions. This meant that virtually anything goes inside the MMA eight -sided-cage tournaments. It wasn’t until 2005 when the US Army held it’s first full contact combative tournament. MMA went through various stages which allowed certain martial art styles to stand out amongst them all. In the beginning we saw Sumo wrestlers, Ninjas and many other styles have their weaknesses exposed. It was the Gracie family style of Gracie Jiu Jitsu that has stood out as a must have style to survive in MMA. The Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu style is primarily a ground fighting system that allows a smaller individual to dominate a larger opponent. Even the Gracie Jiu Jitsu practitioners know that you need a good stand up game for the cage. This has opened the door for people like Chuck Liddell with a Kempo style, wrestling background and extensive boxing training. This combination has been a winning combination for Chuck and given him an international MMA following. The great thing about MMA is that it’s all about training and finding that right combination for each fighter to be at their personal best. While MMA is a very competitive sport, you won’t find a better group of human beings that understand it’s a sport and are usually very humble individuals with families and often jobs or businesses on the side. MMA is now a common style taught in the better martial art schools around the world.
