Muay Thai is believed to have been developed in Thailand and derived from several different martial art styles. It closely resembles Shaolin Kung Fu from China and Indian Boxing from India. However in Thailand Muay Thai can traced back to it’s roots of Muay Boran or ancient boxing as it’s better known.

Muay Boran was said to have been used in unarmed combat by Siamese warriors along with the weapon based style of Krabi Krabong. All of these styles have gone through a transformation over the years and depending on what region you lived in determined what form of the martial arts styles you practiced. Muay Thai was kept alive in Thailand by the Buddhist monks who were the keepers and instructors of all arts physical and spiritual. Because every Thai male was said to aspire to be a Buddhist monk the art of Muay Thai grew in popularity among the community. The Thai’s would say if your worth anything you practice Muay Thai.

Muay Thai was developed for the battle field but because it was so much fun it quickly became a bared-knuckle sport. Thai’s were even known to wrap rope around their knuckles and on rare occasions agree to glue broken glass to it. This is now banned for obvious reasons. Advanced Muay Thai practitioners used to be invited to Royal Palace to teach the staff, Princes and the kings personal guards.

Muay Thai actually until the early 1920's had few if any rules but after it’s first death in the sport that all changed. Rules were put in place to protect the fighters ( Gloves, Foot/Ankle Coverlets ). It was also at this same time when the term Muay Thai was created for the combat sport instead of Muay Boran.

Muay Thai has many legends over the centuries in Thailand. One of the most revered Thai champions was Nai Khanom Tom who beat 10 Burmese warriors at a festival for the Burmese king. The king was so impressed by Muay Thai or Muay Boran as it was known then had been holding Nai Khanom Tom hostage as well as other Thai’s and let them go and even gave Nai Khanom choose between riches or 2 beautiful Burmese wives as a reward. Nai chose the women because he said that riches were easier to find. The king commented that every part of the Thai’s body was filled with venom. The king was referring to the elbows, knee strikes, kicks and boxing he witnessed Nai effectively take apart his opponents with. The king was also impressed with the speed in which Nai beat his opponents. A special holiday in Thailand was created after that feat. It’s called Boxing Day or National Muay Thai Day and is held annually every March 17th in honor of Muay Thai and Nai’s accomplishments.
